Ultra-High Voltage (UHV) transmission technology features large capacity, long distance, low loss and small land occupation. Currently, the commercialized application of UHV technology has been achieved, and a number of UHV projects have been constructed and put into operation in China, and promoting optimized energy allocation and clean energy accomodation. The development and application of UHV technology can meet the future demand of long-distance power transmission from clean energy bases to load centers,providing technical support for the optimized allocation of global energy resources.

Concept and features

Concept
For AC transmission, Ultra-High Voltage refers to the voltage level of 1000 kV and above, mainly for the construction of major grid and transregional power transmission, while providing important support to DC transmission. For DC transmission, Ultra-High Voltage refers to the voltage level of 800 kV and above, mainly for long-distance and large-capacity power transmission from large-scale energy bases.

Features
Compared with EHV transmission technology, UHV transmission technology has significant advantages on transmission capacity, transmission distance, transmission loss, land occupation, etc. The distance of economical transmission by 1100 kV UHV DC can reach 5,000 kilometers, able to fulfill the construction of Global Energy Interconnection, achieve development of large-scale renewable energy bases, and meet the demand for strategic global allocation.

Main projects

China

By the end of 2015, China has constructed and put into operation three UHV AC lines and six UHV DC lines, in which the State Grid Corporation of China completed "Three UHV AC Projects and Four UHV DC Projects", and China Southern Power Grid Co., Ltd. (CSG) completed two UHV DC lines. At present, State Grid Corporation of China is constructing ten UHV projects (four AC projects and six DC projects), while CSG starts to construct one UHV DC project. Currently, China's UHV transmission line in operation and under construction covers more than 33 thousand kilometers, and the transmission (transformation) capacity exceeds 320 GVA (GW).

UHV AC Transmission Project of China

The world's first commercially operated UHV AC transmission project
South-Eastern ShanxiCNanyangCJingmen 1000 kV UHV AC Transmission Pilot Project, including "three stations and two lines", and three stations being located in Southeastern Shanxi (Changzhi), Jingmen of Hubei and Nanyang of Henan respectively, is equipped with transmission capacity of 5GW and it can transmit 25 TWh of power annually.

The World's First Same-tower Double-circuit UHV AC transmission project
Comprised of "four substations and three lines" and with a transformer capacity of 21 GVA, the Huainan-Northern Zhejiang-Shanghai 1000 kV Same-tower Double-circuit UHV AC Transmission Project begins at Huainan Substation and passes through Southern Anhui (Wuhu) Substation and Northern Zhejiang (Anji) Substation on the way, ends in Western Shanghai (Liantang) Substation.

The Longest UHV AC Transmission Project
With transforming capacity of 15 GVA, the Yuheng-Weifang 1000 kV Same-tower Double-circuit UHV AC Transmission Project covers a distance of 1,049 kilometers, passing through Shaanxi, Shanxi, Hebei and Shandong provinces. Along the line, three substations and one switching station were newly built in Jinzhong, Shijiazhuang, Weifang and Yuheng respectively, and the outgoing line interval was expanded at Jinan Substation.

UHV DC Transmission Projects in China

 

For the first time in the world achieved the full capacity operation of 8 GW single-circuit UHV DC transmission, setting a new record in large-capacity UHV transmission.
Xiluodu-Western Zhejiang 800 kV UHV DC Transmission Project, begins with Yibin Converter Station in Sichuan and ends at Jinhua Converter Station in Zhejiang, passing five provinces along its way, i.e., Sichuan, Guizhou, Hunan, Jiangxi and Zhejiang. Each year, it delivers about 40 TWh of clean hydropower from southwest China to Zhejiang, creating a world record in large-capacity UHV DC Transmission.

The world's first large-scale UHV DC transmission project integrating thermal power and wind power
Southern Hami-Zhengzhou 800 kV UHV DC Transmission Project, starts from Tianshan Converter Station in Xinjiang, and ends at Zhongzhou Converter Station in Henan, passing through six provinces (autonomous regions), i.e., Xinjiang, Gansu, Ningxia, Shaanxi, Shanxi and Henan. Taking full advantage of flow capacity of the 6-inches thyristor converter valve, it is equipped with transmission capacity of 8 GW. Each year, it can transmit 50 TWh of electricity.

The UHV DC transmission project with the highest voltage, largest capacity and greatest distance in the world
Zhundong-Southern Anhui 1100 kV UHV DC Transmission Project passes through Xinjiang, Gansu, Ningxia, Shaanxi, Henan and Anhui. Adopting for the first time the 1100 kV DC transmission voltage level, the project has its transmission capacity increased to 12 GW, further improving the efficiency of UHV DC transmission.
