Building Global Energy Interconnection is in accordance with the common interests of all mankind. The United Nations will actively organize relevant parties to jointly promote the innovative development of Global Energy Interconnection.
This conference will play an important leading role in spreading the concept of Global Energy Interconnection around the world, promoting clean energy development and responding to climate change.
At present, the global temperature has increased more than 1 degree Celsius compared with that before the industrial revolution. If effective measures can't be taken, to the end of this century, the global temperature increase shall exceed 4 degrees Celsius, seriously threatening human survival and development. Climate change has become one of the most pressing challenges facing humanity. The root cause of climate change is the burning of fossil fuels. Nearly 2/3 of the global emissions of greenhouse gases are produced by fossil fuels. In the recent 50 years, the world's annual fossil fuel consumption has increased by more than 2 times and has reached 16 billion tons of standard coal. Though there is constant increase in fossil fuel consumption, there are still millions of people who cannot enjoy the basic modern energy services.
In order to achieve the United Nations development goal of "ensuring that everyone can enjoy and afford reliable and sustainable modern energy", the global energy supply will maintain a rapid growth. However, the present world energy system that is dominated by fossil fuels is not sustainable. Thus, to find an energy transformation and sustainable development road on the basis of other alternative energy sources has become a top priority. In this regard, Global Energy Interconnection will play a unique role.
In order to cope with the global climate challenge, the international community has taken corresponding measures. Since the first world climate conference in 1979, in the framework of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, countries have made unremitting efforts to address climate change challenges and reached the 2015 "Paris Agreement". The agreement determines the target of "controlling global temperature rise within 2 degrees Celsius and striving to control it within 1.5 degrees Celsius". To achieve this goal, we need to accelerate the development of the world's advanced clean energy technology so as to create a new pattern of sustainable energy use and fundamentally solve the problem of energy security and climate change, which is also another goal of Global Energy Interconnection.
Global Energy Interconnection can be regarded as an important measure to improve energy efficiency, accelerate the transformation of energy, promote the development of clean energy and respond to climate change issues. We are actively seeking cooperation with other parties to realize the full use of renewable energy through Global Energy Interconnection under the circumstances of meeting the world's energy needs and providing enough sustainable energy so as to make everyone equally access to modern energy services and eventually achieve the goal that everyone enjoys sustainable energy.
Many developing countries and regions including many countries in Africa, Asia and South America have rich clean energy such as wind energy, solar energy and water energy. Through Global Energy Interconnection, the resources of these areas will be transformed into economic advantages for the benefit of the whole people and reduce regional difference so as to make great contributions to the peace and harmonious development of the world.
